Why you should read this

Specialised Time & Attendance systems typically do the job they are supposed to do well.

But read this article to find out why they might not be the best solution for your organisation.

Time & Attendance

T&A products usually revolve around clocking data, and are typically thick Windows based applications that are used by a small number of people within the organisation.

What they do well

Time & Attendance products normally perform well at a functional level:

  • Usually integrate well with payroll data
  • Capable of calculating complex award interpreter conditions

But they are large systems which have usually evolved over many years, they lack the modern concepts which have come into play in recent times, so for this reason a number of disadvantages are present.

Limitations

T&A systems tend to be very procedural and data-driven. This means that you will be locked into their methodology whether or not it fits in with your organisation's way of doing things.

They tend to be (very) expensive, and significant training and support is required.

Since they are normally Windows based, workarounds are often in place for remote branches / offices. This can consist of yet another application (some web-based, others a small Windows applet) which feeds into the main application.

  • This means the level of integration and data validation is limited since these smaller applications don’t have the rules and other required data to alert users of potential issues as they fill in their timesheet
  • It is not possible to view associated payments for the timesheet data, at least in real time.

This means that as the the employee or manager enters a timesheet, they have no way of knowing whether it is incorrect, or which payments are being incurred.

There is no reason in this day and age why this can’t be done in real time rather than allow mistakes to be picked up much later, which puts further burden on the payroll office.
